A man named Ricky had just moved to a new city. He knew nobody in the city and felt very lonely, so he decided that it would be nice to have a pet.
He found a local shelter in the newspapers, noted the address, and went there.
When at the shelter, he saw a few dogs available for adoption. Of all the animals there, he chose a black Labrador. The shelter staff told him the dog’s name was Ray and would respond to Ricky’s commands.
Ricky was happy with his Labrador choice and took the dog home. At first, Ricky attempted to play with Ray and call out commands. However, Ray did not respond to Ricky. It seemed that Ricky just could not get along with the dog.
The shelter staff warned Ricky that maybe Ray would need some time to get used to his new home. Ricky decided to wait for two weeks and see if the dog’s behavior would change. After selecting the Labrador, the shelter staff gave Ricky the dog’s bed, toys, and hints from the previous owner on how to get along with Ray.
After the two weeks, Ricky realized the dog was just not responding, and he was preparing to return the dog to the shelter. While searching for the shelter number, Ricky discovered a letter from the dog’s previous owner among Ray’s things and decided to read it, hoping to find more useful tips.
A surprise was waiting for Ricky when he read the letter. The previous owner, Paul Mallory, was a tank driver in the military, whose name was in the news. Paul worked with the shelter to find a home for the Labrador only if they got word that he was not returning from deployment to Iraq.
The letter revealed much, much more information that made it very clear to Ricky why Ray was not responding. The most crucial information Ricky received was the dog’s name is really “Tank” and not Ray.
