Dog Is Hailed As A Hero
Dog Is Hailed As A Hero One of the qualities, which is revered in Golden Retrievers is their loyalty to their family. A Golden Retriever is also obedient, and intelligent. Being an active breed, Golden’s love to go for long walks where they can run and play. Golden retrievers are people pleasers, and they love their owners. But would a Golden Retriever lay his life down for his owner? Todd, the Golden Retriever, did just that for his owner.
Paula Godwin knows all too well the devotion of her Golden Retriever, Todd. When Todd was six months old, she was taking him and her other dog for an early morning walk near her home in Arizona. As she and her two dogs were walking down a hill, she almost stepped on a rattlesnake.
The Snake, a white speckled rattlesnake, was virtually invisible as it sunned itself on the road. It didn’t let out a rattle or give any indication that it was there. Paula didn’t see the snake until it was almost too late. But her Golden Retriever puppy, Todd, did see it and jumped in between her and the snake.
The snake sank its fangs full of venom into Todd’s snout instead of Paula’s leg. Todd started yelping in pain, and his face swelled up as a reaction from the poisonous snake bite. Paula picked him up and ran for her car. She immediately drove him to the local animal hospital with her other dog, Copper, along for moral support.
Todd had a massive swelling on his face from the snake’s vicious and poisonous bite. After a shot of anti-venom and a 12-hour stay at the vet’s, Todd went home to recover from his ordeal and rest. But the best was yet to come!
When the Padres faced the Diamondbacks (baseball game) on July 8th, 2018, Todd was invited onto the field. As part of Heroes Weekend at Chase Field, Todd was recognized as a hero and honored before the game. He was awarded a Diamondback jersey, which he wore with his tail wagging high. His owner Paula Godwin said she thought it was ironic that the team was the Diamondbacks. It was a diamondback rattlesnake that bit him.
Then it got even better when Todd was awarded The Steamy Award for Milk-bone Dog of the Year, which was an award for the “internet’s favorite animal.” The winner was determined through an online voting process. Fans picked their top choice, and Todd won! Todd received a trophy plus a piece of customized art from the Streamy’s for his victory.
Todd has fully recovered from his ordeal. His owner still thinks he’s a hero and appreciates him every day for his brave act. Todd is truly a hero to Paula Godwin, his proud and loving owner.
