Impulse control is one of the most important concepts to teach a dog. When a dog has good impulse control, they are less likely to cause trouble inside the house. However, a dog with poor impulse control can make home life difficult.
Stain is an Australian Shepherd who is uncontrollable when inside the kitchen. He will steal every food that is left unattended. His owners can’t leave any food unattended, or it will be gone in a blink of an eye.
Victoria Stilwell made a visit to see how bad Stain’s behavior is. She watches as Greg and Shelby places food on the counter. After leaving the kitchen, Stain goes back an takes the food off the counter. They call him a counter surfer.
Stain and the other dog, Peanut, will also stare at the couple whenever they are having a meal. It makes mealtimes for the newlyweds unenjoyable at times. Victoria wants things to change for the sake of the couple.
The trainer shows the couple how to keep the dogs out of the kitchen when they are eating. Whenever the dog crosses the kitchen line, the trainer uses body blocking methods to push the dog back. She uses the same method for the smaller dog. Eventually, both dogs learned to sit outside of the line.
The couple was able to have a romantic dinner while keeping their dogs at bay. However, after the dinner, Stain was still swiping leftover food off the counter. Victoria had to come back and introduce another training method.
Victoria held cupcakes in front of Stain to test how strong her away command is. This was the scene that spawned a lot of internet memes back in the day. The way Stain looks at the cupcakes is hilarious.
After that scene, Victoria introduced a collar that’s connected to a radio transmitter so she can take commands from a distance. Stain is put the test by leaving him alone in the kitchen with the cupcakes. As soon as he tries to eat them, Victoria sends the “away” command from another room.
Greg and Shelby have to do this method until Stain’s counter surfing days end. Victoria leaves again imparting a new training method. Meanwhile, Stain won’t be stealing cupcakes for a long time.
